September 1, 2025

Was that the first cool breeze of the season that just brushed past your cheek? The weather is shifting, which means it’s time for leaf-peeping season 2025! North Conway is widely considered a “must-see” among the community, not just because of the uniquely beautiful array of trees and fall foliage, but also the many ways people can absorb the cornucopia of serene views. Here, you can walk, ride, float, or even fly—which one best suits your style?

Walk (Hike)

Black Cap (Family-Friendly)

Sweeping vistas of the White Mountains and western Maine reward you at the summit of Black Cap. Thanks to its gentle terrain, this hike is perfect for adventurers of all ages and skill levels, making it especially enjoyable for families. Starting from the Black Cap Trailhead on Hurricane Mountain Road, the 2.4-mile round-trip path winds through groves of beech and red oak, treating you to vibrant scenery well before you reach the top.

Table Mountain (Kancamagus Highway) (Family-Friendly)

Rising to 2,675 feet, this roughly 4-mile out-and-back hike leans toward the moderate side but still makes for a rewarding choice for families. From the summit, the sweeping foliage views are spectacular and well worth the effort. The trail begins on Bear Notch Road, just off the iconic, leaf-peeping scenic drive, Kancamagus Highway.

South Moat (Moderate)

This often-overlooked summit offers sweeping 360° views of Mt. Chocorua, the Presidential Range, the Pemi Wilderness, and the village of Conway from its open, rocky peak. Standing at 2,770 feet, you can opt for the classic 5-mile hike or extend your journey by adding Middle and North Moat for a 9.6-mile adventure. The trailhead is located near the Swift River Bridge in Conway, and if time allows, it’s worth strolling through this historic treasure in the White Mountains.

Ride

Mount Washington Cog Railway

For a one-of-a-kind adventure, take in autumn’s beauty from the summit of Mount Washington aboard the historic Cog Railway. On clear days, the peak offers sweeping views across New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, into Canada, and even out to the Atlantic Ocean.

The full journey lasts about three hours, including an hour at the summit, with trains departing daily from the base station. Depending on the schedule, between two and ten trips run each day, powered by a fleet of six steam and four biodiesel engines.

North Country Kayak

Discover hidden rivers and lakes in the heart of the White Mountains while taking in some of the season’s most vibrant foliage away from the crowds. Your guide will lead you along calm waters for a peaceful and picturesque paddling experience that makes it easy to snap a photo or two (more like two hundred!).

Scenic Chairlift at Cranmore Mountain Resort

Take the scenic chairlift up to the Summit Meister Hut and savor a snack or beer tasting while soaking in the breathtaking foliage views of Mount Washington Valley, the Moats, and the Presidential Range. You can explore the summit along one of several trails before riding the chairlift back down the mountain.
